Another artist Wet Paint Productions have worked with is the incredible Smug out of Glasgow and he is Channel 4′s Street Summer competition judge for Scotland . This guy is taking photo-realism to another level and in this film gives you some insight into the scene and what it is he is looking for in a competition winner.
The last few posts have been dedicated to Wet Paint Productions’ (and some of the artists we work with) involvement in Channel 4′s street art competition as part of their Street Summer season in conjunction with Don’t Panic. This summer Channel 4 is celebrating British street culture with some new programmes dedicated to street dance, urban sports, spoken word, hip hop and street art.
And Channel 4 are calling all wannabe street artists, graffiti writers and vandals to join in on Street Summer by entering the competition which starts TODAY.
The last artist but by no means the least Wet Paint Productions put forward as part of Channel 4′s Street Summer competition is Req.
Born in London in 1966 Req is a Brighton-based artist schooled in the New York subway graffiti tradition. His graffiti career started in 1984 in Brighton’s derelict areas but he soon started painting internationally onstage with the Norman Cook band Beats International.
Req’s new work is defined by his attempt to purge the graffiti and graphic influences of his past in favour of a lighter, diffuse impressionism which he calls ‘Spraypaint Realism’. His more recent charcoal and spray paint works on paper provide a quick and more expressive outlet to balance the more intensive ‘Spraypaint Realism’ style.
As we’ve said in the past, if the French impressionist painter Monet used Belton, this is kind of what his work may have looked like.
Req is the judge for the South East and your piece should represent one of the five elements of street culture which the Street Summer season is featuring: street dance, urban sports, spoken word, hip hop and street art. Write, draw, collage, sketch or render your work in any way you like. How you make this work is up to you.
Remember your piece is art but also it needs to work to promote Channel 4′s season. The better your piece looks the more chance you will have of winning but we will accept entries on pen and paper which have been scanned or photographed. Remember the idea is what counts not your computer skills!
Don’t forget that the competition starts on 13th June and for full details on how to enter make sure to follow this link:
The next artist in the line up to promote Channel 4′s Street Summer in association with Don’t Panic is our boy Ventsa, who is representing the Midlands and East. Wet Paint have worked with him in the past and Ventsa really has a unique style. In this film he gives you an introduction to the Birmingham scene and explains a little of what he as a judge is looking for from the winning designs.
The competition will run from 13th June to 17th July so start representing your area and start submitting your designs. All winning entrants’ work will appear in a major city from their part of the UK.
Winning entrants will be paid £300 for the use of their artwork
Winners will have their designs displayed on a premium outdoor space for two weeks in their area during August
Winners will get the opportunity to work with an established street artist from their region of the UK
Winners’ work will feature on the Don’t panic Poster and on postcards which will be distributed across the UK in Don’t Panic Packs
Winners will be featured in a short film about their work
The regions and the artists representing those areas are:
London – Ser
South East – Req
South West – Cheba
Midlands & East – Ventsa
Wales – Rmer
North – Faunagraphic
Scotland – Smug
So, Channel 4 are calling for all emerging street artists, writers and vandals out there, to join their Street Summer competition.
Wet Paint Productions want to wish you all the best of luck. Next post on this site will feature Req’s video who represents the South East out of our home town Brighton. So hope to see some of your work going up soon down here!

This summer Channel 4 is celebrating British street culture with some quality new programmes dedicated to the different elements of street-level genius, focusing on: street dance, urban sports, spoken word, hip hop and (yes, you’ve guessed it) street art! Wet Paint were asked by Don’t Panic - a unique free publication found in carefully selected independent shops, bars, universities and art spaces – to help out with some of the artists and cities.
Don’t Panic is running a design competition on the Don’t Panic site for all budding designers, graffiti and street artists to come up with a creative design. The winners of the competition will have their design used as an advertisement for Channel 4′s Street Summer schedule of programming. They will also have their design printed to postcards and the Don’t Panic Poster to be distributed around the UK.
We’ll be posting some more information about the competition soon but in the meantime here is one of the six videos up on the Don’t Panic site. It features Faunagraphic giving us the heads up on the Northern scene and if you can’t wait to see the other films then make sure to visit:
Wet Paint Productions and Brighton played host to the mighty SheOne this weekend and got a brand new wall from the master of typography in to the bargain. SheOne is firmly routed in Brighton’s graffiti history going back to the early 80′s and along with Req, put up the first pieces on the city’s long-standing hall of fame, Black Rock. Flash forward thirty years and the London-based artist who has gained international recognition and proved that graffiti has a place in the contemporary art world, has taken his style across the globe. Recently, he and fellow Transcend collaborator O.Two, were personally invited to France by the mayor of Ville De Niort to paint a massive production on the side of the city’s Cultural Arts Centre. Last year SheOne was also one of just 100 of the world’s most celebrated writers and street artists invited to secretly paint a disused subway station in New York City as part of The Underbelly Project. Quite frankly, SheOne’s unique brand of abstract painting has led to collaborations and achievements too numerous to list here. That said, Wet paint are grateful to him for an amazing signature piece and urge you all to keep a close eye on his website for some out of sight projects looming on the horizon.
A chance meeting at a Wet Paint party brought the Family Bottrell and Snub 23 together. Local resident Simon explained to Snub how his four-year-old daughter had enquired after the welfare of the planet once her parents had left this mortal coil and what state of affairs would their planet be in? This not only left a lump in his throat but gave Simon a great idea…promote ecological issues through a graffiti mural as part of Brighton’s Festival Fringe! Snub 23, who is powered by Kobra, rounded up some of the crew and put the plan in to action with the backing of many of Preston Drove’s residents. The key messages that came from the younger members of the Bottrell clan were don’t drop litter, conserve water, don’t fly – go camping instead, and walk, skateboard or bike to school. Following the ecological theme, local artists joining Snub 23 were Sinna One, Pinky, Women 158 and ZeeZeeTwentyTwo, who produced this production to a delighted audience of local residents. Above are some images from the forty foot mural but click HERE to see the joiner courtesy of local photographer Big Zee. If you have an idea for a graffiti project or even need an eco wall contact Wet Paint HERE.
A little while back Wet Paint Productions got the opportunity to collaborate with the very talented bespoke Brighton and London – based designer Gresham Blake. Not only does he have a client list that reads like Who’s Who (Nick Cave to Ray Winstone) but in the past he has also worked with other artists such as Banksy, James Cauty and David Samuel to create street-inspired clothing. This time around Wet Paint hooked him up with stencil artists Hutch and Funky Red Dog to produce these amazing ties. We think there are still some left although we have a sneaking suspicion that the Hutch range may have sold out. If you want to add a little street funk to your working day then we advise you to be quick about it. For more on Gresham Blake’s range visit his website HERE but first watch this great film shot and produced by Steve Glazier for Plastic Pictures.
For your viewing pleasure, this short is part of a longer film that was beamed onto the side of a building as part of Wet Paint Productions’ White Night centre piece ‘inCANdescent‘ in Brighton last October. As we have posted before, the production which celebrates the end of BST and embraces winter, was put on in conjunction with artrepublic, ink_d and our good friends at Snowstorm Media. It was Snowstorm who filmed the original footage at Wet Paint’s event The Beautiful and The Canned (this one from 2009), edited and then projected the film at the White Night festival. The film shows Fin DAC and Leeks going to work in Brighton. Thanks to Snowstorm for the use of the footage and we’ll post more shorts in coming weeks. Stay tuned for news on The Beautiful and The Canned!
Wet Paint Productions were busy promoting gadget insurance company Protect Your Bubble to a sold out Gadget Show Live, this weekend. Spread throughout 5 halls of the NEC Birmingham, the Channel 5 show’s live event is billed as the UK’s ultimate consumer electronics event and they are not wrong! So, when the client wanted to increase traffic to their stand, they asked Wet Paint to come up with an innovative way to capture visitors’ attention and imaginations. As part of Assurant Solutions which operates in the US, South Africa, Canada, China, Europe and the UK, the online firm that offers insurance for laptops to smart phones jumped at our concept of spraying screen savers on to these giant iPhones. As the only exhibitor offering experiential marketing outside of the event, Sheffield’s very own Faunagraphic and Rocket01 drew the crowds as their corporate-driven designs featuring the characters Bubble and Squeak went up. One of these designs could well be winging its way to corporate headquarters in Atlanta, USA, before long and we’ll post a picture of the art in situ. Again, our thanks to the artists for their designs and hard work. Any companies looking to boost their presence at exhibitions can contact Wet Paint Productions at: wetpaintproductions@hotmail.com
