Wet Paint Productions and Brighton played host to the mighty SheOne this weekend and got a brand new wall from the master of typography in to the bargain. SheOne is firmly routed in Brighton’s graffiti history going back to the early 80′s and along with Req, put up the first pieces on the city’s long-standing hall of fame, Black Rock. Flash forward thirty years and the London-based artist who has gained international recognition and proved that graffiti has a place in the contemporary art world, has taken his style across the globe. Recently, he and fellow Transcend collaborator O.Two, were personally invited to France by the mayor of Ville De Niort to paint a massive production on the side of the city’s Cultural Arts Centre. Last year SheOne was also one of just 100 of the world’s most celebrated writers and street artists invited to secretly paint a disused subway station in New York City as part of The Underbelly Project. Quite frankly, SheOne’s unique brand of abstract painting has led to collaborations and achievements too numerous to list here. That said, Wet paint are grateful to him for an amazing signature piece and urge you all to keep a close eye on his website for some out of sight projects looming on the horizon.
A little while back Wet Paint Productions got the opportunity to collaborate with the very talented bespoke Brighton and London – based designer Gresham Blake. Not only does he have a client list that reads like Who’s Who (Nick Cave to Ray Winstone) but in the past he has also worked with other artists such as Banksy, James Cauty and David Samuel to create street-inspired clothing. This time around Wet Paint hooked him up with stencil artists Hutch and Funky Red Dog to produce these amazing ties. We think there are still some left although we have a sneaking suspicion that the Hutch range may have sold out. For your viewing pleasure, this short is part of a longer film that was beamed onto the side of a building as part of Wet Paint Productions’ White Night centre piece ‘inCANdescent‘ in Brighton last October. As we have posted before, the production which celebrates the end of BST and embraces winter, was put on in conjunction with artrepublic, ink_d and our good friends at Snowstorm Media. It was Snowstorm who filmed the original footage at Wet Paint’s event The Beautiful and The Canned (this one from 2009), edited and then projected the film at the White Night festival. The film shows Fin DAC and Leeks going to work in Brighton. Thanks to Snowstorm for the use of the footage and we’ll post more shorts in coming weeks. Wet Paint Productions were busy promoting gadget insurance company Protect Your Bubble to a sold out Gadget Show Live, this weekend. Spread throughout 5 halls of the NEC Birmingham, the Channel 5 show’s live event is billed as the UK’s ultimate consumer electronics event and they are not wrong! So, when the client wanted to increase traffic to their stand, they asked Wet Paint to come up with an innovative way to capture visitors’ attention and imaginations. As part of Assurant Solutions which operates in the US, South Africa, Canada, China, Europe and the UK, the online firm that offers insurance for laptops to smart phones jumped at our concept of spraying screen savers on to these giant iPhones. As the only exhibitor offering experiential marketing outside of the event, Sheffield’s very own Faunagraphic and Rocket01 drew the crowds as their corporate-driven designs featuring the characters Bubble and Squeak went up. One of these designs could well be winging its way to corporate headquarters in Atlanta, USA, before long and we’ll post a picture of the art in situ. At Wet Paint we’re feeling pretty smug right now. Having completed four cities for the Brugal Rum campaign, we are winding down for the year but not before we iced the cake. This weekend saw us at Covent Garden with Don, Jeba and Ventza painting live and T-pimping in Navajo Joe and Roadhouse (where Snub 23 put up a specially commissioned piece) . Any one with a handle on the history of UK graffiti will know that Covent Garden was a mecca for the scene in the early 80′s, providing the writers’ bench where many of the old school heads met up until 87 or so. The hoardings that used to surround the Royal Opera House carried some of the earliest burners this country saw from legends like Artful Dodger, Bando, Mode 2 and Scribla (the Trail Blazers), Pride and Zacki Dee, who went on to form legendary writing crew The Chrome Angelz. We are still amazed that Westminster Council let us get away with it and they have told us in no uncertain terms that it will not be happening again. So, although this wasn’t Freestyle 85, Wet Paint Productions have provided a book end to the saga. As ever, we need to thank the artists for getting up in the arctic conditions. An integral part of Wet Paint Productions’ inCANdescent event as part of Brighton’s amazing White Night festivities, was the Lumacoustics YrWall - a digital graffiti innovation that allowed the general public to try their hand at ‘graffiti’ and test their creative talents. You may have even seen it on this season’s Dragon’s Den. Kicking off with Req, here are some of the cleaner renditions from the night (some simply wouldn’t make the watershed). Over the course of the event, hundreds of people swamped the screen and participated. WPP would like to thank Tim Williams and the entire Lumacaustics team for their help and professionalism throughout. This nifty bit of kit can be hired for functions and corporate promotions. As promised, we give you yet more photos from the WET PAINT PRODUCTIONS’ inCANdescent showcase as part of Brighton’s White Night festival. Positive that we have delivered a first, our event rocked the city as it has never been seen before. Wet Paint’s unique concept not only caught the imagination of the council but all of the thousands of people who attended our ‘light graffiti spectacular’ in Jubilee Square as part of the this city-wide event. It’s important to remember though, that without the amazing talents of the artists and a dedicated team, events like this can’t be realised. So, with that in mind, we need to thank the people that made it happen: First shout goes out to our main man Russell, who worked tirelessly to see the project through (you know who are playa!), and to all the artists for their work and vision. Thank you and we look forward to buying you a stiff drink at the WPP Xmas party: Fay MacDonald, of Diosa Media, who is a visionary who never lets us down and underpinned the White Night/Wet Paint concept. At Wet Paint Productions, we have just about recovered from our latest event, inCANdescent – the centrepiece to Brighton’s 2010 White Night festival. Themed on illumination, the city plays host to amazing installations that light the streets of our fair, funky city which entices shops, galleries, municipal buildings and people to stay up late. Commissioned by Brighton & Hove City Council, with support from art republic and Ink_d gallery, Wet Paint’s idea to illuminate columns in Jubilee Square and have some of Brighton’s best graffiti and street artists paint them using transparent paint went down a storm. Thousands of people turned up to watch the event which started with a dance routine from local street dancers Same Sky, followed by live painting from Mishfit, Req, Pinky, Hutch and Imbue. Lumacoustics (as seen on Dragon’s Den) were also on hand with their digital graffiti wall for the public to create their own art, while local film and documentary makers Snowstorm Media rolled out especially commissioned street art films projected on to Myhotel, throughout the night. Being Brighton, the afternoon had started with a Zombie Walk and the whole city was alive with the walking dead which made for a surreal but amazing vibe. As part of the preparations for the forthcoming White Night festival on the night of 30th October across Brighton, Wet Paint Productions helped to arrange a press photo shoot to promote the event. Wet Paint’s audacious event called inCANdescent – in conjunction with Art Republic, Ink_d and Snowstorm Media among others - is designed to paint the festival with light before the clocks officially go back, has won the center piece commission for the entire festival. Wet Paint have a few tricks up our sleeves and to start the ball rolling is our man Req giving you a heads up on what festival-goers can expect from a live painting perspective. With a whole programme from street dance to L.A.S.E.R. Tagging coming your way, Wet Paint will make sure you’re hanging around central Brighton from 6PM on 30th October to experience the funk! Another month and another commission for Wet Paint Productions. This time around it is for Brighton’s newest club The Yard (formerly the Ocean Rooms). When the new owners asked us to be involved we jumped at the chance and unleashed our own ‘Optical Manipulator’, the machine that is Snub 23 to take over and put the ‘street’ into the venue. Before the doors open tonight we thought we’d give you just a sneak preview of what clubbers can expect from the revamp of this three-floor hotspot about to get nightlife in the North Lanes buzzing again. We have been asked to keep the spirit alive by continually changing the interior and experience, so we’ll post more pictures tomorrow after the soft launch and updates as they occur. If you’re in the neighbourhood, get yourselves in for the artwork alone. Like the sound system it’s banging.
